The Babraham Research Campus is also home to The Babraham Institute
Babraham Bioscience Technologies Ltd (BBT) is the commercial arm of the internationally-regarded Babraham Institute, a biomedical research organisation renowned for its work in cellular signalling, immunology, neuroscience and epigenetics. BBT undertakes the Knowledge Exchange and Commercialisation (KEC) remit and business development function for the Institute, developing the infrastructure of the campus to support start-up bioventures. BBT brings together the Babraham Institute's world-renowned research and outstanding facilities with industry in an ideal geographical location at the core of the Cambridge cluster.
The Babraham Research Campus is situated on an attractive 450 acre parkland estate six miles south of Cambridge and is the UK’s leading knowledge-driven Science Park at the core of the Cambridge cluster where world-class research and business come together to promote innovation and strengthen links between academia and the commercial world. Co-localised in the Babraham Institute, the campus Bioincubator offers bespoke, state-of-the-art research and development facilities, scientific support services for bioventures at any stage in the business development cycle and supports the full spectrum of science from R&D to commercial realisation.
BBT aims to drive knowledge exchange and support bioscience innovation through the infrastructure of the Babraham Research Campus, delivering wider economic and societal impact for the UK. In addition to the direct benefits being derived from our research findings in the long term, the Institute and its research facilities form the cornerstone of the knowledge-driven Babraham Research Campus, which is already a rapidly expanding economic success for the Cambridge region and nationally. Since Babraham’s Bioincubator opened in December 1998, 69 companies have been through the facilities. In total, these companies have raised over £360 million of investment funding to date. The current companies occupy 64,000 sq ft of laboratory / office space, including three purpose-built buildings recently developed by BBT.
Cambridge has an active and integrated biotech networking community, making this a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to develop new bioventures. BBT is an active member of One Nucleus, and a member of the Cambridge Network. It also plays an active role in organising events to bring together the full spectrum of stakeholders involved in the roadmap through which blue skies research is commercialised into viable business propositions.
The campus is also close to many world-leading academic research centres such as the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Cancer Research UK as well as the University of Cambridge itself.
