Our Vision
The Babraham Research Campus aims to be one of the leading centres for bioscience innovation in the UK. The campus unites scientific, technological and commercial excellence with an underlying philosophy to cultivate an environment that stimulates effective commercialisation and knowledge transfer (KT) for the benefit of society.
This is expressed as a biomedically-oriented KT continuum, from science to technology to products, ultimately bringing science from bench to bedside. In this way the Babraham Research Campus is a true science park bringing together fundamental, applied science and commercial R&D. This creates an interactive, supportive environment maximising the prospects of success of the curiosity-driven science and the transfer and exploitation of knowledge into biomedical products and services.

Our activities and plans for the Babraham Research Campus exemplifies the ‘Triple Helix’ approach to innovation, with high levels of interaction between academe, government and industry. The knowledge economy is believed to work best when the three strands come together in particular locations to create dense networks and relationships. Our plans generate such collocation with DTI, through BBSRC and EEDA, supporting the Babraham Institute and BBT and its bioincubator.
As a consequence of this public-private sector axis provides BBT with its opportunity to create partnerships across boundaries to bring together individuals to tackle specific problems. BBT is able to commit resources, solve problems, operate independently and look to fund our KT mission and demonstrate increased responsiveness from the publicly-funded research base to the needs of the economy; that is reacting to technology ‘pull’.
BBT’s development of commercial facilities is part of this commitment. The new Bioincubator and BioDevelopment buildings are a key component in the progression of the Babraham landscape, but the overarching objective is to deliver a knowledge-driven campus that promotes post-genomic biology. This will enable the Babraham Group to influence and shape the future development of the region’s biotechnology community, delivering wider economic and societal benefits, such as job creation and increased regional prosperity.
